In 1975, while enjoying an evening of food and fun, four friends, all graduates of North Carolina Central University, decided to charter an Atlanta Chapter of the North Carolina Central University Alumni Association. Thus alumni, Paul and Dorothy McGirt and Clarence and Barbara Boone contacted the national alumni chapter who sent George Nixon to Atlanta to formalize the charter the Atlanta Chapter. Clarence Boone became the first President of the Alumni Chapter, which formalized the local chapter. The small but robust chapter included Judge Isabel Webster, Rev. Elias Hardge and Johnnie Harris. They were soon joined by Orgie Laverne Robinson, Melissa Holloman, Frankie McIntosh, Harold Russell, Cynthia Mullins, Floyd Wood, Mabel Stephenson, Lillian Holeman, Harold Malone, Marjorie Bennett, Margaret Swygert, Catherine Turk, Laverne and Robert Burroughs, Kate Little, Patricia White, Junel Dinkins and Collier St. Clair.  The chapter celebrated its chartering by vacationing in Jamaica in July 1976.

Through the years, the Atlanta Chapter has contributed thousands of dollars to the Merit Scholarship Program at NCCU thru the Ms. / Mr. Alumni Contest. The Chapter scholarship fundraising activities that supported this effort have been an annual Eagle-Aggie Ball (which later became the Eagle Ball) the Eagle Boat ride at Stone Mountain Park, selling sodas in Centennial Park during the 1996 Olympics and other activities. There were also major Fundraising Receptions at the Atlanta City Club, and Club 190. Moreover, the chapter also hosted regional Alumni Conferences, the National Alumni Association Conference, the University Concert Choir, and provided hospitality to the football, and men and women basketball teams. Additionally, the chapter celebrated its accomplishments and enjoyed Eagle fellowship with pool parties at the Boones, cookouts at the St. Clairs, Christmas parties at the Malone’s and the Northwest Hilton, Super Bowl parties at the Russell’s, and ski trips to Beech Mountain, North Carolina.

Since the chartering of the Atlanta Chapter, the efforts and dedication of Atlanta area alumni have nurtured and advanced the chapter mission into the new millennium.  Our former Presidents: Clarence Boone, Orgie Laverne Robinson, Julius Milton, David Logan, F. Junel Dinkins, Michael Bohannon, Johnny Robinson, The Honorable Ronald Ramsey, and Dr. Henry E. Holloway were honored to have collaborated with countless committed alumni in the Atlanta Chapter.  Many of our signal fundraising activities benefited from the spectacular marketing skills of the late Collier St. Clair and the late Hosea Miller. Accordingly, the Chapter established a Collier St. Clair Scholarship at Cascade United Methodist Church in Atlanta.  Moreover, the chapter has recognized the outstanding achievements and contributions of Atlanta Alumni Bishop Eddie Long, Vernon Jones, William Stanley, Ben Hill and the late Maynard Jackson.

This century, Presidents Ernie Suggs , Shawn Askew, and Alex Snelling have aptly taken the helm of this chapter. We’ve enjoyed a rich history and have provided scholarships for many deserving student at NCCU. The future is extremely promising. We look forward to our Alma Marta becoming a foremost University of distinction and an Alumni chapter which continues its mission steeped in the tradition of “Truth and Service”.
